What are the typical reasons for which a policy can be canceled?

A revoked or suspended driver's licenses can cause cancellation of your policy - even if the guilty party is not you. It could be someone who lives with you, or someone who customarily operates your auto.

For what reasons can a policy be nonrenewed?

the policy is covering a vehicle being operated by a member of the household who is not eligible for coverage.

What can I do if my policy has been canceled or nonrenewed and I can’t find another insurance company that will write insurance for me?

All states have some form of assigned risk coverage for people who cannot get an insurance company to voluntarily insure them. That’s because you need insurance in order to drive. The premiums may be high, but you are guaranteed acceptance. Check with an insurance agent or ask your state insurance department about how to get assigned risk coverage.

Is there a grace period for the payment of premiums?

If you do not pay your premium when due, the insurance company will notify you that your coverage is being cancelled. Typically the notice will give you at least 15 days before the cancellation takes effect. If you pay the premium before the cancellation date, your coverage will continue.
